I’m being overwhelmed with chicks. This is my second broody hen, a sex-link, and here she is where her five little baby chicks…

Are they not adorable? Notice there are two little grey/blue chicks, two black chicks, and one Easteregger that is barely showing in the yellow. They were hatched last Monday and I haven’t had much time to spend with them due to the other chicks I have all over the place. Again the best thing about hatching with a broody hen is that she takes care of all the work compared to making sure the brooder chicks have the correct temperature of a brooder, etc.

This coming week I am expecting some Black/Blue/Splash Orpington eggs that I bought and plan on incubating in hopes of starting this breed. They should be here by Wednesday so I’m dusting the incubator off and getting ready. Maybe I will have another hen go broody before then and let her do all the work. One can only hope :) .

Not only do I have eggs coming, I also have my second shipment of Light Brahma chicks and Golden-laced Wyandottes due in on Wednesday also. My brooders are staying busy. I haven’t shown you photos of the previous shipment of Brahma and Wyandotte chicks. They are growing like weeds and sooooo cute!

I am working towards raising a few pure-bred breeds and this is my start. I will still have my original flock for sale of eggs but the pure-breds will be more for showing and selling. I am working towards offering Brahma, Wyandotte, and Orpington hatching eggs in the future. At present I have Buff Orpingtons that are now laying but I will be hatching the first set of eggs as they mature to insure fertilization. I also have Dark and Light Brahmas and am in search of Buff Brahmas. I thoroughly enjoy the Brahma breed. They are so friendly. Even in the brooder the light brahma chicks are the first ones to come forward and roost on your hands and arms.

Let’s hope my BBS Orpington eggs have a 100% hatch rate that will further launch my additional option for the Orpington breed. I am also in search of White Orpington eggs in hopes to add this to my Orpington breed.

Plans, plans, plans…it just never stops. I just love raising chickens, especially baby chicks, and planning daily for more.

  1. I will be visiting my mom in Clay County July 10th, I so wish that I could bring back some buff orphingtons on the plane. Can you imaging the look on their faces at JAX? LOL I’m glad you are having such good luck with the broody hens. I am thinking about having a good talk with some of the girls. No one wants to set!

  2. Actually, I believe you can bring the chicks on the plane so long as they are in a carrier small enough to slide under your seat. If you put them in a purse sized carrier and keep the “lights” out they may even be so quiet nobody would notice. Call your airline and see what the restrictions are. My son was able to bring his hamster on the plane in his pocket, so why not chicks??

  4. I would hate to think of what would happen if they wouldn’t let them get checked in…Security is so tight nowadays. I sure would make for a great story though! I just love baby chicks too!

Mandy, Those little chicks are 1/2 blue plymouth rock. A local person raises these birds and I bought three hens from her and these two little chicks were some of the results.
