Finally got my husband to temporarily put the incubator back together so I can share pictures of it. He did not put the bottom back in it so you do not see the trays that hold the water for humidity or the mesh wire shelf that the eggs lay upon.

Here it is:

Exterior Leahy IncubatorLeahy Manufacturing IncubatorLeahy incubatorLeahy incubator

As you can see in the picture, the light is on indicating it is running. Because of the condition of the insides, I probably will not utilize for the original purpose but will display it in my future country farm home. I have big plans!!! I can visualize it now, one huge room, homey with a warm inviting kitchen and my incubator and miscellaneous chicken items all over the place. As Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream!”

Does anyone have any suggestions? When I first started hatching chicken eggs this season my incubator had about a 90% hatch rate. With each setting of eggs the hatch rate has gone down. My humidity is good, the temp is perfect but the chicks are not even pipping, they are just dying in the shell. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

    Carole,
I run my temp. at 100 degrees and my humidity is good. I hand turn my eggs twice a day. Once around 7:30 a.m and then around 7 p.m. This is the way I have always done it and as the season goes on my hatching rate decreases. I would appreciate any advice you might have.

    [Reply]

  26. Carole on said:

James, I have incubated three sets of eggs thus far and my second was 100% hatch rate and this is what I found worked…temperature at 100-I rotated three times a day until 18th day(morning, afternoon, and night)-humidity first 18 days at 40% to 50%, on 18th day increase to 60% to 70%. One other thing I did on the second set was on day 18 put the eggs in a holder big end up. The chicks will hatch out and not disturb the others that may hatch later.

On my third set of eggs I was not as attentive and did not rotate as should have been and also did not use the egg carton to hold the eggs. I only got a 60% hatch rate from those eggs.

One other question, do you candle the eggs to insure all are fertile after day 8? I candle mine all during the process and discard those that are not developing.

  27. Bob, I’d love to have a copy also. Please email it to me.

Carole,I do usually candle the eggs. As a matter of fact I usually candle the 8th day and the 14th day. I never put any eggs in the incubator that are over a week old. I just hate to throw out eggs with fully developed chicks in them. The next setting I will try your method and put the big end of the egg up. I usually just lay them on their side. Thanks, James

Carole, I left the big end of the eggs up and I did have a better hatch rate. Out of 40 eggs only 6 did not hatch. The eggs that did not hatch, the chick atleast broke through the egg and I could see the beak of the chick. Aslo the eggs that did not hatched everyone of them had been knocked on their side by other hatching chicks. Now I am trying to figure out a way to keep them all up and see how the next ones do. Thanks for all yor suggestions.

    [Reply]

  31. Carole on said:

James, Thanks for giving us an update. That is good to know having the eggs in a stable position with airsack up increased the hatch rate. I will make sure to do this on all my incubations in the future. Congratulations on your last hatch of eggs with a hatch rate of 85%!

The 40 auto stands 73 in. high by 27 wide by 54 deep and holds 126 Emu eggs. The 80 auto is double door and stands 73 in.high by 441/2 in.wide by 54 in. deep and holds 252 Emu eggs. The 30E is 56in.high by 261/2 in. wide by 43 in. deep. Trays have all been reworked to accomodate Emu eggs with room to spare. Redwood is in excellent shape. [Reply]

  35. Hi Sharon,

Let me share some experience with you and your friend about dry chicks. I was telling a friend of mine about the dry chick problem. He told me to put wet paper towels over the eggs. I did and it did not seem to do much.

We place our pheasant eggs in paper egg carton bottoms a few days before they hatch. We do this to keep the big end up.

To solve the dry chick problem, we took the egg cartons and dipped them in a cake pan of water. We let the extra water run off. We then put the pheasant eggs in the wet egg cartons and then placed them in a couple of “Little Giant” Styrofoam table top incubators set at 99.5 degrees. The little chicks started coming out slick as a whistle. No problems.

We took the newly hatched chicks and placed them in the bottom tray of the Leahy 626 Favorite Incubator for 10 to 18 hours to dry them out. After that we transferred them to our home made brooder. Before we wet down the egg cartons we only got about 80 to 85% to hatch. Now it is 100%.

A friend of mine who has loaned me the model 625 told me to spray the eggs with water every time we turn them. We have slightly hard water so we are using distilled water.

    Best Regards,

    Bob Gunther,
    Shilshole Kennels

Hey Bob. We too just purchased a Leahy incubator and as far as I can tell it is model 228. Could you please send me a copy of a manual. I know this model was not listed but I figured any info would be better than none. Also I too would like to know where to get parts. My e-mail address is lynchaynes@yahoo.com. Thank you for all your trouble. Right now I am questioning my sanity in buying this one but desperately needed an incubator. It is suppose to hold 500 eggs with 5 trays. Thanks so much

I have a Leahy incubator for sale, it’s a model 1200,will hold 1000 eggs. It’s made from redwood, is vintage, but in good working condition. We are asking 1500.00 for it. It will take at least 4 people to load it into a truck.

I don’t have a picture, but here isa link to someone that has one just like it.

I have an Incubator 416E and need a information booklet.
It has a small 1/2 bar at the bottom of the tray with extended wire on each side to pull in and out ,but I noticed the eggs were not turning when I tried. The incubator is in perfect condition and holds heat good ,But the only problem is how to turn the eggs.
