raising chickens is fun, fowl visions on raising chickens

When I first started raising chickens I had no idea what I was doing, what type of housing was needed, or what to feed them. My husband being raised on a farm had all kinds of chicken coop ideas. We ended up adding onto the side of our well house a lean-to shelter and expanded frequently.

Over the years I have read books and researched the internet about chickens and have come across some elaborate chicken coop plans. A couple of years ago I was introduced to what is referred to as a “chicken tractor”.

At first I had no idea why anyone would want to keep chickens in such as small space since I didn’t realize what the purpose of it was. After reading a little further I noted that several people utilize these “chicken tractors”.

Recently I sold a chicken through Craigslist and my now friend, Michelle, was the purchaser of this hen. During our conversations via email she emailed me some pictures of her chicken tractors and gave me permission to share them with you.

As you can see by the pictures, Michelle has her own little flock. Her husband built these chicken tractor coops for her and I quote her, “The coops are cool because I wheel them around the yard, so if I can’t let the birds out for whatever reason that day, they still have fresh grass to pick at. This way there are no totally bare spots that take grass forever to grow back.”

Perhaps a chicken tractor is for you.

  2. Hi there,

I am in somewhat of a rural area and just aching to get some chickens… I had them when I was a teen. I love this chicken tractor idea for our smallish yard. Did your friend Michelle make these pretty much on their own, or did they use plans? My husband is willing to make one for me, but wanted me to find plans if I can. How fun, I can’t wait.

Nancy, I believe Michelle’s husband made them from just seeing others, no plans. There are tons of plans available on the web and I also have an advertiser on this site that sells plans, Catawba Coops; you just click on the ad and it goes into further explanation. It really depends on how elaborate you want to get. My husband made me one but it didn’t have a place for the chickens to lay and also was not very mobile so we turned it into a brooder pen.

Good luck with your future with chickens! The fun is just beginning.
