Finally the long wait is over. Ellie Mae laid her first egg!

Just in case you don’t remember who Ellie Mae is…

She was born on May 10th and I thought because she was an easter egger chick that she would lay green eggs. But no, she laid a small brown egg like her mother. Her mother is Lacy, a Silver Laced Wyandotte and you can tell by the picture that Ellie Mae has the same laced feathering that her mother does.

No matter what the color of the egg, at 27 weeks old, Ellie Mae laid her first egg and I am very pleased!

Now I have two other pullets that were born on the same day that should be laying anytime. I can tell by the comb of Miss Jane that she will be laying soon also.  Now Granny is a different story. I don’t even see a comb on her and she is the same age. What is up with that?!?

  1. Because my Bantam chickens our mixed, I don’t think any 2 have the same kind of comb. I have even had roosters without combs.
In fact I have got a white silky mix, I have only had black ones and the bloodline was very thin. so whenever my babies grow up is always a surprise right now I have some chocolate colored ones where they came from I will never know

  4. Love your chickens! When I was young, I had an aunt that could tell if a hen was an egg layer or not. She would come spend the day, feel of the hen and tell us which was was a layer and which one wasn’t. Those that weren’t were slaughtered for the winter freezer. She was always right, we had the same amount of eggs as hens. Good luck on your egg layers! blessings, Kathleen
