This breed is a dual-purpose breed meaning it is a good egg layer and also a good meat bird. There is another breed that is sometimes confused with this breed and that is the Dominiques or Dominikers.
The way you can tell the difference between the two breeds is by their combs. The Dominikers have rose combs and the Barred Rock have a single comb. Rose combs are almost flat on top and very fleshy. The single comb stands up and has five or six points.
Some other qualities about the Barred Rock:
- Lays large, brown egg
- Very cold hardy
- Dual purpose, weighing approx. 7.5 lbs. for the standard size
- Adaptable to confinement or free-range
- Friendly and easily handled
These are an excellent backyard chicken and I highly recommend adding them to any flock.
