raising chickens is fun, fowl visions on raising chickens

Christmas is coming and this is so not like me to plan early! But this year my gifts are going to be home-grown and pickled by me…(this is another thing that is new to me!). My fall garden is bringing in a fair share of cucumbers so I’m making refrigerator pickles along with these cute little chicken pot holders.

This was my first attempt at making the potholder. Don’t look close because there are lots of flaws but my hopes are that it will get easier and I will get better as I make more.

Here is a picture of the pot holder being utilized by me…it will give you an idea of what the wing flaps are for…

I am a beginner sewer so this is all new to me. I did make some Christmas trees last year and they were fairly easy so if all else fails I will go back to making those.

You are probably thinking this was the reason why I have been absent from my blog as of late. Well not really. I have really been focusing on increasing my flock and improving the stock.

Here is a picture of my latest hatch from eggs I purchased from a breeder in Pennsylvania…

I have a total of 11 that hatched out of 15 that I purchased from this breeder. That is an excellent hatch rate for shipped eggs. I did have some Buff Brahma hatching eggs in the incubator at the same time from a breeder in Florida and none of those hatched :( . I will know not to buy from this person in the future.

Anyway, I am very pleased with my new little chicks. As you can see by the picture I have some that are solid yellow and then there are others that have black and yellow down. I’m not sure what this means as far as true-to-breed but I plan on putting bands on the black and yellow down chicks to track and see which has better feathering in the future.

I now have two LG incubators, one with a fan that I utilize for the first 18 days of incubation while the eggs are in rotation, and the other is a still air that I utilize for the last three days of incubation. Today I have 10 more eggs that went to still-air for their final three days. These hatching eggs are Lt. and Dark Brahma eggs from a breeder in South Carolina. I hope I get as good a hatch as last week.

In my next post I will share with you my returns from my mini-vacation to the Smoky Mountains in TN/NC. They are not Christmas gifts for anyone, except maybe me.

  1. The chicken potholders are cute! I think they will make great Christmas gifts. I plan on giving more hand/homemade stuff this year also.

On the Brahmas. I had to ask my husband about the solid yellow ones because I don’t remember any of our Light Brahmas being solid yellow.
It did seem like the darker color ones turned out to be roosters a lot of the time.
It will be interesting to see how the yellow ones color out.

    They sure are cute.
    Have a great day.

  2. The chicks are adorable and so is your pot holder. It’s always fun and challenging to learn something new. I haven’t tried sewing a thing in 30 years. I think you did a good job.
