Remember a long, long time ago I wrote about using an electric skillet as an incubator? I never was able to get a successful hatch from the skillet but did learn why.

At present I have an incubator full of hatching eggs in the automatic egg turner. These eggs were not all put in at the same time so my plan is to use the electric skillet for the last days the incubation period.

I have three sets of hatching eggs in the incubator all at different time frame–one set is due to stop rotation tomorrow so they will be going into the electric skillet. This set came from my Buff Orpingtons and Dark Brahmas. Next week, Friday,  I have 15 that are due  to stop rotation and I plan on using the electric skillet for them also. This set was purchased from a breeder in SC so I have money invested in these and definitely want them to be successful.

I’m thinking this should work because now I have the hydrometer and thermometer in place to monitor the humidity and temperature. I sure hope so. I know other people who have used an electric skillet for the whole incubation period successfully so surely I can make it just for three days. Time will tell and I will keep you updated.

  1. though i’ve never tried hatching eggs with this, we have found that a terrarium stone works great for keeping very small batches of chicks warm. it seems to be a lot more energy efficient than those big red floodlights and it stays at a constant 100 degrees.

no guarantees but perhaps that would work for finishing your hatch.

    good luck!

  2. (oops, i meant to mention that, by terrarium stone, i’m referring to the ones that keep pet lizards, turtles, etc., warm.)

    i hope it helps!

  3. I also have had eggs in the bator that needed to come off of the auto egg turner before others. I moved them all off of the egg turners putting those that needed to still be turned into a egg carton with two small pieces of wood cut like a door stop underneath the egg carton hand turning the carton three to four times a day. It worked fine for us. Of course I am sure your skillet will also work out just fine. Good Luck.
