Can you imagine my excitement when I get an email asking me to contact the general manager of Randall Burkey so they can arrange delivery of my new chicken tractor. No, I didn’t order a chicken coop but I did enter a contest and I thought, “Oh my, I have won the coop!”

A couple of months back I ran across a listing advertising a contest to win a chicken coop/tractor. I enter just about anything that gives something away for free, especially when it has to do with chickens. So I entered and forgot about it until I received the email.

So I call the up Randall Burkey and give them my name. The general manager comes on the line and says

(GM)”Is this Carol?”
(Me)Yes, this is Carole and I got your email. Did I win the contest?
(GM)Is this Carol Simpson?
(Me)No, (very disappointedly) Carole DeJarnatt.
(GM)I don’t know how I got your email address but we are looking for Carol Simpson to find out when she would like her chicken tractor delivered.

Talk about disappointed. I told him I thought I had won a contest and he was shipping me a free chicken tractor. He laughed and I am sure he thought I was crazy. But for a few minutes that day I thought I was a winner.

Oh well, you win some and lose some. My new white orpingtons are great. I’m going to have to add a blog post about them as soon as I get some pics of them. Also my Buff Orpington pullet laid her first egg yesterday. Lots of fun going on with the Orps.

  2. I won a 10 guage shotgun once, but my X husband has it. I wish you won the coop too–You are a winner in my book!

We are getting 3 eggs a day now! Thank you so much for all your advice to get us on track to ‘food independance’!

  4. I sure wish you would have been the winner of the tractor, too! But, since we are on the topic of chicken buildings.. I thought I would bring up a possibly worthwhile topic, maybe you might be interested in putting somewhere in your blog?

Recently I ran across an internet site talking about building a chicken coop from used wood shipping pallets. My husband had been telling me to do this for years, and I always said NO WAY because I honestly thought it would turn out really ugly and unstable.

Well.. Money is tighter now than ever, I am sure you guys feel it too… so I looked up his idea on the internet.. LOOK what I FOUND!!! I am Sooooo excited! I now have a stack of 40 or 50 pallets in my back yard and I am getting started today!

Samantha, Thanks for sharing that awesome site. You probably have given lots of good ideas to do with stuff we just thought was good for the burn pile.

  6. Too bad about the tractor, Carole, but maybe Samantha’s website has an idea for a way to build one out of discarded wood palletts? That’s a great site, Samantha, thanks for sharing! I see lots of palletts thrown out, and usually we just chop them up for kindling, but reusing them first is a much more sustainable way to build. And alot cheaper way, too.

Marina, Thanks for stopping in and commenting. I agree with you, the site Samantha shared is an excellent resource for DIY people (or maybe a wife who has a wonderful husband that will do the job for her). :)

  7. I just built my own coop, but I certainly would love a more professionally assembled one with a tractor! I can’t imagine how they could get it wrong, since you certainly do not have the same email address as any other Carol who might have also entered the contest…

Love your site, and I have you on my blogroll (not sure if I had mentioned that before in a comment…)
